City Kickboxing’s head coach Eugene Bareman has been nominated for a Halberg Award.
The New Zealand Awards, which have been held annually since 1963, are presented to sports people of remarkable achievement.
Bareman has been nominated under the category of Coach of the Year. His gym, which is located in Auckland, New Zealand, has had a standout year.
Of the five New Zealand fighters signed to the UFC, four are under Bareman’s tutelage: Dan Hooker, Israel Adesanya, Shane Young and KaiKara-France. So far, Bareman has coached them to a flawless year. City Kickboxing is currently 8-0 in UFC showings this year.
This puts them in second place in the MMA Manifesto’s latest update of the 2018 Fight Team Standings. The rankings, which quantify the success of each gym based on the performances of their fighters in the UFC, has City Kickboxing currently seated below American Kickboxing Academy.
It shows a marked improvement on last year where just two City Kickboxing products were signed to the promotion and they went 2-1.
Along with recognising sporting excellence, the Halberg Awards raise funds for the Halberg Foundation, a charity dedicated to improve the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders. This year marked a record number of nominations for the six categories.
For now, Bareman will be focused on his next appointment which is tomorrow when lightweight contender Dan Hooker takes on Edson Barboza at UFC Milwaukee.
