On Friday night Elliot “The Dragon” Compton returns to the ring at ONE: Spirit of a Warrior.
The four-time World Caged Muay Thai Champion will face American Matthew Semper in a ONE Super Series kickboxing bout in Yangon, Myanmar.
Just nine weeks ago, Compton made his promotional debut in Manila where he lost to Brazilian muay thai legend Cosmo Alexandre. Though he most likely claimed the first round, Compton lost in the second after being dropped by a perfectly-placed knee to the body.
Compton told Fight News Australia that he’s taken the loss in his stride, and has it to thank for a change in perspective.
“I love this life that I live and I’m learning with every fight and every year that I get older, the importance of being happy and grateful for where I’m at”.
Speaking of his next opponent, Compton was respectful of Matthew “Sobek” Semper and the challenge he presents.
“Matthew is extremely durable and has power in both hands. He has a lot of experience and I’ve heard through the grapevine that he’s a workhorse in the gym. He is an aggressive, walk-up style fighter that likes to throw bombs and dirty style boxing from the clinch,” Compton said.
Though he’s confident his own abilities can get the job done.
“I have a unique style for thai boxing that carries over extremely well into the cage with 4oz gloves, hence my 6-0 record in Caged Muay Thai. My timing, distancing and variety of techniques make me a hard fighter to prepare for.
“My keys to victory for this fight is to do what I do best. Be precise, explosive and unpredictable.”
Semper (56-22-1) trains out of Tiger Muay Thai gym in Thailand. He boasts an impressive 24 knockouts in his 56 career wins and has claimed the PK-1 Super Heavyweight Title and the AMCO Cruiserweight Title.
Speaking with AsiaOne, Semper showed mutual respect of Compton.
“I think it will be a challenge for him, and I think he will be a challenge for me,” he said.
“We both know the same people. We are cool. We have spoken and we said, ‘Let’s get it on and get Fight of the Night.’ We are going to go in there and just go hard.”
ONE: Spirit of a Warrior will be held this Friday, June 29 at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar.
Headlining the event is ONE middleweight and light heavyweight champion Aung La N Sang, who is set to defend his middleweight belt against Japan’s Ken Hasegawa.
The preliminary card and two fights from the main card will air live on Twitter and Facebook from 8pm (AWST), while the entire card is available via the ONE Championship App.
