Almost exactly one year since making his UFC debut, Israel Adesanya will take on middleweight legend Anderson Silva.
Adesanya vs. Silva has been booked for UFC 234, which takes place on February 10 (AU) at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Victoria, per ESPN.
Considered by many as the greatest of all time, Silva went on a 17-fight win streak which included defending the UFC middleweight championship 10 times. Although he’s had a more inconsistent run recently, it’s a huge opportunity for the young prospect.
Silva will be returning from a one-year USADA suspension. He failed a drug test in October 2017, though it was eventually ruled to be the result of a tainted supplement.
Silva (34-8) last competed in February 2017 at UFC 208 where he won a unanimous decision against Derek Brunson. Brunson is also Adesanya’s last opponent. Earlier this month, “The Last Stylebender” knocked out Brunson in the first round.
Since his debut in February, Adesanya (15-0) has looked unstoppable. The undefeated Kiwi has risen to every challenge presented, defeating four opponents just this year and all but cementing his place as Breakthrough Fighter of the Year.
In UFC 234’s main event, Australian middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is set to defend his title against Kelvin Gastelum.
