He ‘Cain’, he saw, he Conquered. The return of Francis Ngannou! Wow, what a main event from UFC ON ESPN 1.
A couple of things remain true in the wash up of the historical first show on ESPN. Ngannou is a frightening man if he can lay his hands clean about your person, and Cain Velasquez’s days in the sport are most likely numbered. He has had a horrible run with injuries and vintage Cain would have destroyed Ngannou. I was actually really excited to see ‘old’ Cain back and breathing new life into the stagnant heavyweights. Hopefully Ngannou v2 can have another run at the title, after all he is exciting to watch, and with the dynamite he carries in his hands, no one is safe.
I actually think in reflection, Velasquez might feel a little silly saying his knee blew out and he wasn’t affected by the punch as the replay clearly shows an uppercut from the depths of hell hitting him square on the jaw.
It was a crazy weekend for injuries. Matt Mitrione kicked a man so hard in the testicles he was disqualified and the fella was stretchered out, it was 15 seconds into Bellator 215 main event.
In the Cage Warriors 101 main event Frenchman Boukichou threw a massive round kick, which was checked by his opponent, subsequently breaking his own leg in Anderson Silva style, we wish him a speedy recovery.
Oh, and Paul Felder, the toughest commentator to ever fight (that’s a joke, he’s the toughest fighter to ever commentate) suffered a punctured lung in the 3rd round of his decision win over James Vick. He’s now fought an entire fight with a broken arm and finished one with a punctured lung. Not a game for the faint of heart, this MMA lark. Felder had the following quote post fight “I got two lungs… I just want a beer for shitsake”- Real man!!!
Finally some regional MMA started back up this weekend, Coastal Combat on the 23rd and Diamond Back FC on the 24th. However, and I may be a little biased, the big show returns March 2nd at the HBF Stadium with a 20 fight card on Eternal MMA 41 in Perth. Don’t forget to buy a ticket to any live events if you live nearby and if you don’t then watch the PPV(Pay per view). It’s really important to support local MMA events as this is where the emerging ANZAC talents you enjoy watching on the big show get to cut their teeth.
